How to Get a Moving Estimate for Your Home

What is a Moving Estimate?

Moving estimates are quotes given by reputable moving companies that outline the scope of work, the services requested and the costs associated with the move. This enables the homeowner to budget appropriately for their upcoming move.

There are three types of moving estimates: binding, binding not-to-exceed, and non-binding estimates. Be sure to research which type of estimate your local Houston moving company offers and make sure you understand what each estimate means.

How Do You Get a Moving Estimate?

Getting an estimate can be an easy process and begins by researching local Houston moving companies to find those that provides the services you need. It is recommended to get estimates from at least three different companies to adequately compare the services and costs.

Once you find some moving companies that are a good fit, reach out to them to schedule a consultation, which is also called a survey. You can either contact them by phone or online, in fact, many companies have a form you can fill out on their website. The form asks for information like your contact info, your estimated move date, your starting and ending zip code, and how you would like your estimate, either in person or virtually.

How are Moves Estimated?

Moves can be estimated off many different factors, however, the main thing to determine is if it’s a local move or a long-distance move. Local moves are most likely to be paid by the hour, and the cost depends on how many movers are needed, the number of moving trucks needed, and the size of the trucks. Long distance moves are almost entirely based on the weight of everything being moved. The following is a list of other factors that are considered for a moving estimate:

  • Types of additional services being requested
  • Approximate square footage of the home
  • Any specialty items that require special packaging and handling
  • The type of residence and number of rooms
  • Shuttle fees if the moving truck cannot be parked close to the house
  • Stair carrying fees

How Do You Prepare for a Moving Estimate?

Most of the preparation comes down to having all necessary information ready and available before your consultation.  Be sure to check the company’s website beforehand to get more specific information they are looking for so you can set it up prior to the survey. A moving specialist will gather details for itemized lists to determine the cost of your move. They will usually explain what to expect in your moving process and offer any additional services the company provides like packing assistance or temporary storage, if needed. There are two main ways estimates can be conducted: in person or virtually.

Preparing for In Person Moving Quote

In person consultations, also called surveys, are when a moving professional comes directly to your home to prepare an inventory list and get the details of your move to create an accurate estimate. This is the most common way surveys are done so movers can more clearly see the space they will be working in and what will need to be moved. Preparing for an in-home survey involves several steps.

  1. Book your survey as early as possible since timing greatly affects the cost of moving. If you schedule in peak moving season (May to September, or holidays), the cost of your move could be much higher. Four weeks out from your move is generally a good estimate for when to schedule your survey.
  2. Make sure to take inventory of your furniture by making a list of what you’re planning to take with you during the move. Label anything that you aren’t taking with you and items that you aren’t quite sure about.
  3. Determine what services you might need outside of general moving services. Some moving companies offer additional options like packing and unpacking services, but be sure to check their website or ask the mover during the survey and let them know of the additional services you are interested in.
  4. Clean and declutter your home so there are no obstacles for the movers to navigate through, enabling them to have a clear view of your home.

Preparing for a Virtual Consultation

A virtual consultation is a video call or pre-recorded walk-through of your home. This is not as common since it isn’t as reliable for an accurate quote, however it still is an option for some companies. Movers need to be able to see your home so they can know the layout, any obstacles present, and entry and exit points so they can adjust the estimate accordingly and bring the right equipment for the job. Here are some tips for preparing for a virtual walk-through for a moving quote:

  1. Make sure to charge your device and that you can flip between the front and back camera.
  2. Count how many rooms, closets, and spaces are in the home so you can have that information available beforehand.
  3. Take inventory ahead of time so you know what you want the movers to handle, what you aren’t bringing with you to the new home, and if you’re taking anything yourself. Label all items accordingly.
  4. Make sure all lights are on, and all cabinets, drawers, and closets are open before the survey so the mover can see everything clearly.
  5. Do not forget any spaces and items that are kept outside, including storage sheds and garages.

How to Find the Right Moving Company for You

Moving doesn’t have to be stressful, and part of what can help make it go smoothly is choosing a reputable moving company that provides the services you need. The following is a general list of tips to consider that might help you choose the best moving company for you.

  • Get several estimates to compare prices between businesses.
  • Generally, avoid non-binding estimates since they do not guarantee the final cost.
  • Check reviews to see what others think of the company and what their experience was.
  • Confirm that the company you’re choosing is properly licensed by checking with the Department of Transportation, your local government, or the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
  • Look for companies that will only offer quotes after seeing your home to get the most transparent and accurate moving quote.

Choose a reputable local Houston moving company to get an accurate moving estimate and have confidence in the fact that they will help make the moving process easier and stress-free.
