Can Movers Store Your Stuff? How Moving With Storage Works in Houston

Author: Joe Beverly |

Yes. Many full-service moving companies, Blue Ox included, will pick up your belongings, keep them in their own warehouse and deliver them to your new home when you are ready. You never rent a truck, load a storage unit or move anything twice yourself. This guide explains how moving with storage works in Houston, what it costs and how to plan the gap between homes.

A real Blue Ox storage move: Rachel sold her Spring Branch home in March, then her builder in Bridgeland pushed her closing back twice. We stored her household for 4½ months in two vaults, with her sofa and headboard on the overflow racking, and delivered when the new house was ready.

“Everything came out of storage looking exactly like it went in, and the crew had the beds set up before dinner.”
— Rachel, Cypress (Bridgeland)

When Houston Movers Store Your Things

Most people who ask whether movers can store their stuff are stuck between two dates. The common reasons we see:

  • Your sale closes before your purchase. You have to be out of the old house, but the new one isn’t yours yet.
  • The builder pushed move-in again. We hold everything until you get the keys.
  • A remodel. New floors or a kitchen redo go faster in an empty house.
  • A temporary assignment or time overseas. You keep the household without paying rent on an empty home.
  • Downsizing. You keep the pieces that don’t fit yet while you decide what stays.

How Moving With Storage Works

With Blue Ox, one crew and one written estimate cover the whole job:

  1. Pickup. Our movers pad, wrap and load your furniture and boxes, the same way they handle any local move. If you want everything boxed for you, our packing crew comes first.
  2. Into private vaults. At our warehouse at 6355 Clara Rd, your things go into wooden vaults, about 7 × 7 × 5 feet, that hold one customer’s belongings only. Everything is inventoried going in and coming out, and each vault is sealed. Long sofas and headboards go on overflow racking in the same building.
  3. Stored. The whole warehouse is climate-controlled, video-monitored, alarmed and sprinklered. Mattresses, TVs and electronics are fine in storage, and you’re welcome to come see your vault. Your valuation coverage carries through storage and the move back.
  4. Delivery. Give us 2 days’ notice and we deliver to your new address anywhere in the Houston area, or long-distance. You can take everything at once or in parts.

Mover Storage vs. Renting a Storage Unit

Storage with your mover Self-storage unit
Who loads it The moving crew You, or movers you hire twice
Truck Included with the move You rent and drive one, both ways
How it’s priced Per vault per month, plus hourly pickup and delivery Per unit per month, plus your truck and labor
Getting things out We pull your vault by appointment ($75 per vault) Whenever the facility is open
Best for A whole household between homes Things you need to reach often

If you need to visit your things every week, a unit near your home may suit you better. If you are storing a whole house for a few weeks or months, mover storage saves you the double handling. More on the trade-offs, including PODs, is in storage unit, POD or full-service storage.

What Moving and Storage Costs in Houston

You pay three parts, all on one written estimate:

  • Pickup: our regular hourly rates of $150 an hour for 2 movers, $225 for 3 and $300 for 4, with a 2-hour minimum and no fuel surcharge.
  • Storage: $60 to $75 per vault per month, billed monthly from your move-in date. Most customers keep a card on file so it runs automatically. Stays longer than 3 months get the lower rate, and there is no minimum stay.
  • Delivery: the same hourly rates as pickup. If you take your things in parts, each delivery is billed at those hourly rates.
  • Vault pulls (optional): $75 per vault if you need something before delivery.

Most homes need 2–3 vaults for a 1-bedroom, 3–4 for a 2-bedroom, 4–6 for a 3-bedroom and 6 or more for a 4-bedroom. A 3-bedroom house in 4–6 vaults runs about $240 to $450 a month in storage. Your moving consultant confirms the vault count when they build your estimate. Full rates are on our Houston moving cost page.

Planning the Gap Between Homes

  • Book early, especially for summer. Vaults fill up in the summer months, so give us your move-out date as soon as you have it. Here is how far ahead to book movers in Houston.
  • Pack a “living out of a suitcase” box. Documents, medicine, chargers, school things and a few changes of clothes stay with you. We can pull a vault for you, but it is scheduled and costs $75 per vault.
  • Label by room and contents. It makes a vault pull quicker and delivery day smoother.
  • Store only clean, dry things. A damp towel or a wet cooler can mildew in a sealed box.
  • Know what can’t go in. We can’t store food, plants, liquids, fuel or oil, or firearms. Drain mowers and generators first.
  • Tell us about big pieces. Long sofas, pianos and safes need to be on the estimate.
